Balance Flexibility and Power
by Tom Black
The bent press is, quite frankly, the masterpiece of
lifts. There is very little instruction on how to perform this lift on the
web, and fewer in-series pictures showing the various postures while performing
the lift.
| Starting
Position |
The series of pictures in
this article are from Alan Calvert's "Super
Strength," while I've labeled this picture "starting
position" it's only because it was the first in the series from the
book. The true starting position of the bent press would more
properly be the point in which the barbell is lifted using two hands so
that it is nearly perpendicular to the floor and resting against the
lifter's shoulder. Lifting the barbell from this position is
actually a lift in itself, the "Barbell lift to shoulder."
With heavy weight this lift alone can be very challenging. Using the
picture to the right as a reference, the barbell lift to shoulder is
performed with the right hand on the center of the bar and left below it
on the bar. The lifter then pulls the barbell up, bringing it into
the position as shown.

Ending Position

This picture actually shows the end of the portion of the lift in which
the lifter bends underneath the bar. From here the lift
"simply" stands up.
